SUMMARY

Abstract

Yonsekuk(“a play combined with moving picture”) emerged around the late of 1910’s as a hybrid genre for the purpose of the box-office profits. For that reason, Yonsekuk has been accused as ‘an anomalous play’ in the modern theatre history by Yun, Baek-Nam, etc. However, this study intends to emphasize the role and the significance of the melodramatic Shinpakuk(“New Trend Theatre”) and hybrid Yonsekuk in the formation of the modern theatre at that time. The Electrical Equipment Shinpakuk emerged around the middle of 1910’s just before Yonsekuk. This form of Shinpakuk met the demands of the audience who was eager for the lively and realistic stage. It produced the special effects of the rains, snow, lightning, and ghost, etc. by use of the machinery called as ‘유니버스’. That sorts of reality seemed to be also related with the demands of the verisimilitude and realisitic ‘chosun’-style of mise en scène. Yonsekuk adopted the most advanced technology, that is to say, the moving picture into Shinpakuk. Although the portion of the moving picture was so small and even hurted the aesthetic of the play, it con- tributed to extend the reality or realistic demands of the moving picture into the entire production. For example, an actress, which was the char- acteristic of the modern drama, was being substituted for Onna-gata (“female character played by a male actor”) of Shinpakuk in Yonsekuk.
