Abstract

This study examines director Na Un-gyu’s chain drama (Yeonswaegeuk) productions of the 1930s, a subject that has not been systematically explored in research on Korean cinema during the Japanese colonial period. It provides a historical analysis of their significance, with a particular focus on thirteen chain dramas in which Na was involved, including six that he directed. Chain drama, a performance format that integrates film and theater, has been documented as the starting point of Korean film history but has long been regarded merely as a precursor to narrative filmmaking. However, in the early 1930s—when silent film production was in decline and filmmakers were experimenting with talkies without adequate material infrastructure—Joseon filmmakers actively engaged in filming for chain drama performances, not as a peripheral task but as an integral part of cinematic practice. By examining the inherent "duality" of chain drama—its intricate fusion of cinematic elements and theatrical performativity—this study positions the chain drama productions of the 1930s, in which Joseon filmmakers participated, as cultural artifacts shaped by the colonial/imperial system.
