Abstract

Kim, Ŏk and Kim, So-wŏl were the most important poet and critic, respectively, in the emergence of modern Korean poetry in the early twentieth century.  Memorial essays have been written about their relationship, and Kim, Ŏk also wrote about their poet-critic relationship. Reorganizing the narrative about Sowŏl’s life in his writings mourning So-wŏl, Kim, Ŏk revealed that the desire for death was the most critical principle that drove So-wŏl to write poems constantly. Kim, Ŏk identified the physical event of death with the act of writing; that is to say, he suggested that So-wŏl’s writing had repeatedly prefigured the poet’s death. In texts of mourning written at the time of So-wŏl’s death, Kim, Ŏk both revealed and concealed this fact; the equivalence between the desire for death and the act of writing. Because Kim, Ŏk’s works of mourning brought him face to face with his own death, Kim, Ŏk could not complete his mourning for Kim, So-wŏl. This is why Kim, Ŏk published repeatedly the selfsame essay three times. Completing the work of mourning remained impossible, but Kim, Ŏk achieved an ethical approach in these works of mourning by publishing them under anonymity, namely, deleting not only his pseudonym An-sŏ but also his autonym Kim, Hǔi-kwŏn. The works of mourning written by Kim, Ŏk led to the formation of a literary community in the early period of modern Korean poetry.
