초록

Kim Eok, one of the key pioneers of the modern Korean poetry, asserted in his folk poetics that the essence of Korean folk poetry is ‘simplicity’ found in the rhythms and rhymes. Sowol refused to become a folk poet and challenged the conventional idea to avoid the simplification of poetic images by taking repeats, inversions, changes and variations of rhymes and structures. He attempted to combine the features of the contemporary western poetry with the Korean traditional spirits and folks while keeping the rhythmical charm of Korean folk songs in order to achieve poetic uniqueness. Mokwol further expanded the Sowol’s poetics into the area of physical poetry using ellipsis, compression and reduction. Kim Eok’s folk poetics as opposed to the western free verse and Sowol’s use of traditional rhythm, poetic repeats, variations and patterned story telling represent important markers showing the generation of aesthetic modernity in the modern Korean poetry. It is found that Mokwol followed the traditional rhythms used by Sowol. However, he failed to sufficiently deepen the conflicts between self and others and also employed the very conventional way to reach the reconciliation. As a result, the tension arising from the lyric experiences hardly leads to the poetic self’s creative reflection. The aesthetic modernity of the modern poetry should be understood in the process of interpreting the forms and stories of poems and the relationship between self and others reflected on them from a perspective of conflict and struggle rather than harmony. In addition to that, the creative approaches should be taken to understand the aesthetic modernity.
