민주주의의 기로에 선 1950, 60년대 아시아 지식인－『사상계』의 문화자유회의 관련 활동을 중심으로

이 글의 목적은 1950, 60년대에 문화자유회의 내에서 제기되었던 아시아 민주주의 및 아시아 지식인 관련 논의들을 살펴보고, 이를 기반으로 하여 1960년대 『사상계』와 문화자유회의와의 관계를 검토하는데 있다. 4․19혁명은 『사상계』가 한국 사회의 가장 유력한 지식인잡지로 부상시키는 계기였을 뿐 아니라, 『사상계』에 연루된 지식인들에게 자유 민주주의자로서의 자긍심을 심어준 계기이기도 했다. 4․19혁명의 경험에 자극받은 『사상계』는 당시 최대의 자유주의 지식인 네트워크로 알려져 있었던 문화자유회의와의 제휴를 추진했다. 『사상계』는 문화자유회의와의 교섭 끝에 문화자유회의의 비공식적인 한국어 매체 자격을 획득했으며, 이 자격을 이용해 문화자유회의 네트워크 내 세계 지식인들과 교류하고자 했다. 다만 문화자유회의에 대한 『사상계』의 관심은 시기에 따라 변화를 겪었다. 초기에만 하더라도 『사상계』가 문화자유회의 내에서 관심을 가졌던 교류 대상은 주로 서유럽, 미국 등지의 서구 지식인이었다. 그러나 1960년대 중반 이후의 『사상계』는 문화자유회의 내에서 활동하던 아시아 지식인들과 함께 탈식민, 반권위주의 투쟁의 경험을 공유하려는 모습을 보여준다. 비록 김준엽 등 『사상계』 지식인들이 1960년대 후반 이후 문화자유회의를 통해 기획했던 아시아 지식인 관련 프로젝트들은 『사상계』와 문화자유회의의 거의 동시적인 붕괴로 인해 실현되지 못했다. 그러나 서류로나마 확인 가능한 이 계획서들은 1960년대 후반 들어 장준하, 김준엽 등 『사상계』 지식인들이 서구 중심주의로부터 탈피해나가는 한편 제3세계 지식인들에 대한 전향적 자세를 갖추게 되었음을 드러낸다.
Abstract
This article examines how the Congress for Cultural Freedom developed discourses on democracies and intellectuals in Asia how the social perception of intellectuals and what relationship does Sasanggye Magazine with the CCF. Sasanggye is one of the most prominent magazines in the first half of the 1960s. Encouraged by the April revolution, Sasanggye affiliated with the CCF, one of most international organization for liberal democratic intellectuals in the 1950s and 60s. As an unofficial Korean organ of the the CCF, Sasanggye intended to exchange with the rest of the world. Sasanggye just paid attention to the West intellectuals in the early 1960s. After the middle of the 1960s, however, Sasanggye tried to share their experiences as intellectuals in post-colonial new states with any other Asian intellectuals in the CCF networks. Sasanggye intellectuals worried about the new Korean authoritarian regime’s efforts to conflate democracy with the state-led nationalism, and wanted to refer the other Asian intellectuals’ similar experiences. Unfortuately, the Asian intellectual networks that Sasanggye proposed to the CCF wasn’t realize because of the fall of both of Sasanggye and the CCF. However, the unfinished proposals on the solidarity of the Asian liberal democrats demonstrate that Sasanggye intellectuals, including Chang Chunha and Kim Junyeop, free themselves from the West-centrism and have the forward thinking on the Third world intellectuals.
