Abstract

This paper reviews Shin Chae-Ho’s Proclaiming the Third Samiljeol to Compatriots in Celestial Drums to present new understandings about his recognition of national essence and international relations. In it, he declares that Samil Movement is the most historic turning point of reviving Korean, accomplished by the historical first national unity from the ordinary people. It makes intriguing contrasts with his interpretation of Myocheong’s Revolt in the Greatest Event during One Thousand Years History. His conclusion about Samil Movement is succeeded by the Preamble to the Constitution of R.O.K. The another representative leading article in Celestial Drums, proposing his point of view on international relations, is the Friendship between Korean and Chinese is the Most Righteous Matter. In it, he debates proper communication and interchange must be acquired an essential prerequisite, the acknowledgement of the identity of Korean ethnicity and historical tradition different from China. The ultimate tactics towards Japanese Colonizer from two articles is equivalent, the voluntary violence resist of people presented in A Declaration of Korea’s Revolution. He evaluates Samil Movement as the greatest historic event due to its voluntary national unity from people. Therefore it opens the possibility to reserve national essence without subordination to the World Powers. In Celestial Drums, his emphasis on direct awakening and participating of people, regardless of governments and political parties, closely related to Anarchism, based on international relationships, but the purpose of his Anarchic anti-colony strategy is the methodology for ultimate task, national essence. Thus international relations and the preserve of national essence, in Celestial Drums, are mutual supplement. Meanwhile, it is significant reference to illuminate the intellectual transition of him, from Statism to Anarchism.
