Abstract

This article examines the evolution of Scottish Conservative Discourse in the era of the Atlantic Revolutions (the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth Centuries). Central to the anti-radical project of leading Scottish commentators was a sophisticated analysis of the historical development of the global order, focused especially on the nature and consequences of British imperialism in Asia and America. An important but historiographically neglected figure, whose arguments are crucial for appropriate understanding of the public debate about British governance, and especially Britain's controversial role in the international system, was the writer William Playfair. His importance was demonstrated in his editing of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations (in 1805), in which Playfair employed and adapted the historical framework of Scottish political economy.
