Abstract

Segumjeong, located outside Changui-mun, has been recognized as an area where many literary figures lived during the Japanese occupation, comparable to Seongbuk-dong outside Dongso-mun. However, this area has received less scholarly attention in literary research than the Jongno neighborhood and Seongbuk-dong. In this paper, I identified and organized the addresses of writers such as Song Young, Hyun Jin-gun, Lee Ki-young, Lee Kwang-soo, Hong Sa-yong, and Lee Won-jo, who lived outside Changui-mun. Their residences were visualized with detailed street numbers using the Precise Map of Gyeongseong with Street Numbers and Districts(地番區劃入大京城精圖), published in 1936. I also uncovered local and publishing activities that had not previously been documented in the writers’ chronologies, and analyzed how their perceptions of suburbia were reflected in their literary works. The area outside Changui-mun served as a base for publishing children’s magazines, the site of Lee Kwang-soo’s Hongji Publishing House, and a meeting place for the literati who lived in Buam-dong and Hongji-dong. In particular, while living outside Changui-mun, writers experienced the marginalized realities of the area—realities masked by its natural beauty—and they criticized the oppressive and inequitable aspects of urban development through essays and articles. Additionally, they projected the poverty and tragic fate of the local people in their novels. In doing so, they not only expressed compassion for the local residents, but also revealed the woes of colonized intellectuals by portraying their own plight as writers living outside the gate. Before and after the development of Gyeongseong, there was a cultural desire in Joseon to idealize certain areas as desirable places to live, by linking the natural environment with the cultural sophistication of their residents. However, the activities and writings of writers outside Changui-mun challenged colonial urban policies from the margins, revealing how the circumstances made it impossible for the empire to appropriate writers’ reputations as tools of self-legitimization.
