Abstract
This paper focused on the representations of non-human entities (animals, ecosystem, mysterious phenomena) in the works of North Korean writers who defected to the Soviet Union, as found in the Korean-language literature addressing the 1937 forced migration published in the Koryŏin diaspora newspaper Koryo Ilbo and Lenin Kich’i. Firstly, by focusing on the literary works of Koryŏin such as Han chin, Lee chin, and and Ryang Wŏnsik, it highlights the difference between their works from the Korean-language literature of Koryŏin who forcibly immigrated from the Primorye Region to Central Asia. It also examines the relationships that Koryŏin writers have formed with other minority (human race) groups. Secondly, it explores how Koryŏin compare themselves to non-human entities or describe the ecosystems they encountered during their forced migration and settlement process. Thus, this paper aims to highlight the experiences of the Korean diaspora through the uniqly positioned writers who are “Koryŏin exiled from North Korea,” which cannot be reduced solely to the “victimhood of the Korean diaspora” or the “victimhood of the human diaspora.” This comparative study of Korean Diaspora will serve as a starting point for exploring non-human diasporic relationality and ecosystem, moving beyond ethnocentric (racial) diaspora theory and anthropocentric humanism.
