Abstract
This paper re-examines the anxieties of the British middle class and their unstable social status in the early 19th century through an analysis of Newgate novels. During this period, Britain underwent rapid industrialization and urbanization, which led to an increase in new forms of crime. This social phenomenon necessitated the expansion of public authority to address these challenges. While the middle class acknowledged the necessity of the stronger public authority to curb the rising crime rate, they simultaneously felt discomfort, fearing infringements on their rights and freedoms. This dual perspective, coupled with concerns over economic instability caused by the increase of property crimes and fears of physical and social displacement due to intensifying conflicts with the working class, is vividly reflected in Newgate novels. Such representations challenge the myth of ‘the victorious middle class’ in Victorian England, which assumes that the middle class had established socio-cultural hegemony following the 1832 Reform Act. While earlier discourses mainly focused on examining the truth of the middle-class hegemony with their relationship between the upper class, Newgate novels provide a fresh perspective, mainly depicting the tensions with the working class. These novels reveal that the middle class authority, far from achieving complete dominance after the Reform Act, remained insecure both from the above and below well into the late 1840s. Thus, the myth of ‘the victorious middle class’ during this period appears to rest on a much unstable foundation than traditionally believed to be.
