Abstract
A silver colloid technique to identify nucleolar organizer region associated protein(AgNOR) was applied to 68 biopsy specimens(punch and hysterectomy) of uterine cervix. These comprised 16 normal biopsies of the cervix, eight. cases of incomplete squamous metaplasia, seven cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(CIN) Ⅰ, nine cases of CIN Ⅱ, 14 cases of CIN Ⅲ , five squamous cell carcinoma and nine cases of invasive. squamous cell carcinoma. The mean numbers of AgNORs in normal, CIN , microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma and invasive squamous cell carcinoma were significantly different. The number of AgNORs in immature squamous metaplasia appeared higher than that in normal columnar cell , but could not be distinguished from normal squamous cell. Statistically significant differences were also found in comparisons between CIN Ⅰ,Ⅱ and Ⅲ , and in comparisons between CIN Ⅲ, microinvasive and invasive squamous cell carcinoma. It is therefore suggested that quantitation of a silver colloid staining for NOR -associated proteins is diagnostically useful and has considerable clinicopathological potential in cervial pathology and cytology.
