Abstract
A strain of Vibrio cholerae O139 that produce cholera toxin has been implicated in epidemics of cholera -like diarrhea. The morphological, cultural, and biochemical characteristics of V. cholerae O139 are similar to those of V. cholerae O1. O antisera were produced by immunizing rabbits with serogroups O22, O139, O155, and R of V. cholerae. Following results were obtained ; 1. The 0 agglutination titers in these three O antisera from immunized rabbits against the serogroups O22, O139 , and O155 of V. cholerae were in the range of 640"-' 1280, these antisera contained R agglutinin titer of 80~320 against an R antigen. 2. The agglutination of O antiserum against O22 , O139 , and O155 strains after absorption with R antigen were demonstrated between the O22 and O139 antigen , and between the 0139 and O22 strains, respectively , and the O155 antiserum did not react with O22 and O139 antigen. 3. The titers of homologous agglutinin of 0 antiserum against O22 strain of V. cholerae after absorption with O139 and R antigen of V. cholerae were 80. V. cholerae O139 antiserum were also agglutinated after absorption with O22 and R antigen of V. cholerae , and the homologous titer was 160. 4. V. cholerae O1 antiserum reacted not only O1 strain but also O155 strain of V. cholerae , but O22, O139, O155 and R antisera of V. cholerae did not react with an O1 antigen of V. cholerae. It is concluded from this study that the diagnostic antiserum against O139 strains of V. cholerae must be absorbed with O22 and R strain of V. cholerae to remove cross-reacting agglutinins of the O22 and R strain.
