Abstract

The Purpose of this study is to explore the moderating factors of the influence of foreign word-of-mouth(WOM) in online contexts. In this study, we expect that animosity toward and status of the WOM sender's country have moderating effects on the influence of foreign WOM. To test our expectations, we conducted two experiments. We obtained several findings through the experiments. First, when WOM receiver's perceived animosity toward the sender's country is high, the influence of negative foreign WOM is weaker than when the animosity is low. Second, the status of the sender's country moderates the influence of foreign WOM. The effect of foreign WOM is higher when the status of the sender's country is high than when it is low. Lastly, we discussed the implications of this research and suggested the direction of future research.
