Abstract
The presence of certain HPV types in the female genital tract is associated with a number of diseases, including condyloma, cervical vaginal and vulvar, intraepithelial neoplasm and carcinoma. It is generally accepted that these viruses are predominantly sexual transmitted and high risk HPV types are recognized as the major recognized risk factor for development of cervical carcinoma. Cytology and histology tests are important in detecting clinically manifesting HPV infections, However, these test can not identify the presence of viral particles on patients’smicroscopic slide. the presence of viral particles in the muclei of epithelial cells in these lesions has been documented by electron microscopy by Dunn and Ogilvie in 1968 and confirmed by Oriel and Alameida in 1970. This study was performed to examine immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy method for the adult patient 96 cases who were histologically was diagnosed as condyloma acuminatum from January to October 1998 in the Seoul National University Hospital. In conclusion, for the confirmation of Human Papiloma virus infection in cervicalspecimen, it is necessary to correlate histological diagnosis with immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Electron microscopic examination combined with immuohistochemistry is a useful and effective method to diagnose HPV.
