Abstract
This study attempts to compare the stock price behaviors of the KOSDAQ listed firms between prior to and after the exercise of employee stock option by the corporate executives. It also investigates the relationship of stock price with future business performances and several proxy variables for agency cost. This study hypothesizes that the stock price movement would take a different path according to whether the positive effect of the executive stock option outweighs the negative effect of agency motives such as pursuit of short-term profit-taking or the reverse. This study finds that stock price has risen substantially over the periods prior to the exercise of stock option by the executive officers. However, the stock price starts to lose upward momentum, rising only 8% relative to the market within a year after exercise of stock option, which amounts to only one-fifth of stock price increases over the comparable time interval before exercise. The stock price behaviors seem to incorporate the future corporate performance so that firms with higher profitability have shown higher return performances. In addition, the dilution effect resulting from new issuance of stocks and a possible short-term profit-taking after exercise of stock option is presumed to have a negative effect on stock price.
