합작투자성과에 미치는 통제와 협력의 효과: 협력의 매개효과를 중심으로

초록

본 연구는 국제합작투자를 수행하는 기업을 대상으로 다양한 통제유형(산출통제, 과정통제, 사회통제)과 합작투자성과의 관계에 파트너와의 협력이 매개역할을 하는지를 실증적으로 확인하였다. 표본은 한국무역진흥공사(KOTRA)에서 발행한 ‘해외진출 한국기업 디렉토리’에서 해외에서 국제합작투자를 수행하고 있는 한국기업을 대상으로 추출하였다. 협력, 통제에 기존의 연구를 토대로 연구모형과 가설을 설정했으며, 실증분석은 Baron and Kenny(1986)와 Hayes(2013)가 제시한 절차에 따라 진행하였다. 실증분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 통제유형 중 산출통제를 제외한 과정통제와 사회통제가 파트너와의 협력에 긍정적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 통제유형 중과정통제와 사회통제가 합작투자성과에 긍정적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 파트너와의 협력은 합작투자성과에 긍정적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 통제와 합작성과 간의 관계에서 협력의 매개효과를 추가적으로 분석하였다. 그 결과 협력은 과정통제와 합작성과, 사회통제와 합작성과의 관계에서 매개역할을 한다는 사실을통계적으로 확인하였다. 본 연구의 이러한 실증결과는 다음과 같은 시사점을 갖는다. 첫째, 통제유형에 따라 협력과 합작성과에 미치는 효과가 상이하다는 것이다. 이는 곧 합작파트너 간의 협력을 증진하거나 성과 향상을 위해서는 통제 그 자체가 아니라 통제방식을 달리해야 함을 나타내는것이다. 둘째, 과정통제와 사회통제는 합작투자성과에 직접적인 영향력을 가질 뿐 아니라협력을 매개로 하는 간접적인 매개효과도 갖는다는 점을 연구결과는 제시하고 있는데, 이러한 사실은 통제유형에 따라 합작투자성과에 미치는 영향력이 차별적임을 시사한다. 즉, 어떠한 통제방식을 선택하는가에 따라 파트너 간의 협력수준과 합작성과가 달라진다는 것이다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 한계점을 가지고 있다. 첫째, 표본을 협력사업 중 합작투자에함으로써 연구결과를 일반화하는데 다소의 무리가 있다. 둘째, 본 연구에서는 파트너기업이 속한 국가문화나 조직특성을 반영하지 못하고 있다. 이러한 요인들은 사회적 관계를 전제로 한다는 점에서 의사결정이나 협력에 상당한 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 따라서 향후 연구에서는 이들 요인을 통제하거나 비교하는 연구가 필요하다고 본다. 마지막으로 본연구에서는 협력의 매개효과만을 살피고 있으나, 신뢰, 기회주의, 몰입, 만족 등과 같은요인들을 동시에 고려하여 보다 정확한 효과를 살필 필요가 있다.

Abstract

This paper aims to empirically test the relationship between control and international joint venture (IVJ) performance, especially the mediating role of cooperation among partners on the relationship between control type and IJV performance. Sample was selected from the ‘2011/2012 Directory of Korean FDI Firms’ published by KOTRA. Based on the extant researches on cooperation and control research model and hypotheses are established. Empirical test was carried out along the methods suggested by Baron and Kenny (1986) and Hayes (2013). The empirical results are as follows: first, depending on the control types the effects of control on the cooperation among partners are different, i. e. process and social control have positive effects on the cooperation but not in the case of output control. Second, similarly process and social control have positive effects on IJV performance, but not in output control case. Third, cooperation among partners has positive effects on IJV peformance. Additional analysis shows that cooperation selectively has positive mediating role on the relationship between control types and IJV performance. Only on the relationships between process control and IJV performance, and between social control and IJV performance cooperation has positive mediating role but not in the case of output control. The results of this study have several implications as follows: first, depending on the control types the effect of control on the cooperation differs. This means that to improve the level of cooperation among partners it matters not the level but the types of control. Second, process and social control have not only direct effects on the IJV performance but also the indirect effect through the cooperation on the IJV performance. This means that depending on the types of control the effects of control on the IJV performance differs. In sum depending on the control types the level of cooperation and IJV performance differs. This study also has several limits. First there are several type of cooperative venture, but this study focuses only on the IJV so that it has limitation of generalizing the results of this study. Second, in general it is said that the background of the partners, especially the national or the organizational culture, have significant effects on the decision process. Unfortunately this study does not consider that kind of attributes. It is needed that the researches controlling the background effects or the comparative researches are mostly preferred. Finally this study scrutinized only the mediating role of cooperation. The extant researches suggest that several other factors such as trust, opportunism, commitment, satisfaction etc. also can play the mediating role. It is needed to empirically test the effects and role of these factors for deeper understanding on the behavior of partners in IJV.
