Abstract

This study investigates the impact of environmental dynamism on firms'product innovation and the underlying mechanisms, focusing on themediating effects of internal technological knowledge creation and externaltechnological knowledge acquisition. Analyzing survey data from manufacturingSMEs in China, the results of the study show that environmental dynamismpositively influences product innovation. Both internal technologicalknowledge creation and external technological knowledge acquisition werefound to mediate the relationship between environmental dynamism andproduct innovation. Additionally, internal technological knowledge creationexhibits a double mediating effect on product innovation through externaltechnological knowledge acquisition, and these three internal and/orexternal knowledge securing pathways were found to fully mediate therelationship between environmental dynamism and product innovation. Interestingly, the mediating effect of external technological knowledgeacquisition was found to be greater in size than that of internal technologicalknowledge creation. These findings provide important implications fortechnological knowledge management strategies in dynamic environmentsto enhance firms' product innovation.
