Abstract
This study establishes a research model considering the external network, technology capability, and commercialization capability of SMEs to more systematically explain the open innovation performance of SMEs, which is relatively lacking from previous studies. For hypothesis tests, data from 504 companies out of 723 data collected for companies located in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do are used for empirical analysis. As a result of the empirical analysis, first, the external network has a positive relationship with product innovation and the share of new product sales (H1-1 & H1-2: Accepted). Second, the external network has a positive relationship with technological and commercialization capabilities (H2-1 & H2-2: Accepted). Third, technological capability does not have significant positive results with product innovation (H3-1: Rejected), but the share of new product sales has significant positive results (H3-2: Accepted). In addition, commercialization capability has a significant positive relationship with product innovation and the share of new product sales (H3-3 & H3-4: Accepted). Fourth, technological capability does not mediate the relationship between external networks and product innovation (H4-1: Rejected). However, it positively mediates the relationship between external networks and the share of new product sales (H4-2: Accepted). Finally, commercialization capability positively mediates the relationship between external networks and product innovation and the relationship between external networks and the proportion of new product sales (H4-3 & H4-4: Accepted). In conclusion, the analysis results are summarized, and implications are presented.
