크리스티안 볼프는 동양과 유럽 사이의 문화적 지성사에서 라이쁘니쯔와 함께 가장 중요한 역할을 한 철학자의 한 사람이다. 그가 1721년 할레 대학에서 했던 『중국의 실천철학에 관한 연설 』은 계몽시대 초기 유럽에서 유교를 긍정적으로 수용하고자 하였던 정신적 움직임을 상징적으로 보여준다. 이 글의 초점은 볼프가 유교 사상을 수용하면서 다른 문화권에서 전해져 온 상이한 사상의 요소들을 어떻게 그리고 어떤 연관 관계 속에서 자신의 고유한 사유를 드러내도록 통합시켰는 지를 규명하는 것이다. 볼프는 예수회 선교사들이 전해 준 유교의 텍스트를 전적으로 유럽적인 맥락에서 수용하였다. 볼프를 통해 유교는 완전히 새로운 문화적 의미를 갖게 되었고, 유교가 말하고자 하는 것은 급진적인 변화를 겪게 되었다. 우리는 상징적 담론의 장에서 볼프가 자기 문화권 내에서 정치적으로 유리한 고지를 차지하기 위해 어떻게 중국이라는 다른 문화권에서 형성된 유교사상을 자신의 헤게모니적 전략을 위해 차용하는가 하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 이러한 전략이 성공적이었는가 아닌가 하는 점은 물론 별개의 문제이다.
Abstract
Christian Wolff together with Leibniz is one of the most important philosophers for the intercultural history of political ideas. His lecture Oratio de Sinarum philosophia practica, which he gave in 1721 at the University of Halle, is of symbolic importance for the positive reception of Confucianism in Europe during early enlightenment. This paper focuses on how Wolff integrated elements of Confucian philosophy and culture into his own philosophical system articulating certain political interests. Wolff read the classic texts of Confucianism within his European and German context. In his reading Confucianism obtained a radically different cultural meaning. One can observe how Wolff used Confucianism as a central element to gain hegemony in a totally diferent social symbolic discoursive space. If he was successful in this effort is a different matter.
