인터넷 집단지성의 동학과 정치적 함의 - 아레나형과 아고라형을 중심으로

본 연구는 최근 주목받고 있는 집단지성의 장점에 천착해 인터넷 집단지성의정치·사회적 의미를 분석하고자 하는 시도이다. 집단지성은 최근 사회과학계에소개된 개념이다. 하지만 집단지성을 둘러싼 이론적인 오해도 있는 것이 사실이다. 집단지성의 장단점이 무엇인지를 파악하기 위한 노력의 하나로서 본 연구는위키피디아와 다음 아고라 사례를 중심으로 집단지성의 특성과 형성에 관한 메커니즘을 분석했다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 첫째, 집단지성의 특성은 지식권력과 연계되어 있었다. 둘째, 위키피디아와 다음 아고라의 집단지성은 정보통신기술을 활용한 새로운 형태의 지식집단이라는 점이다. 셋째, 두사례의 인터넷 집단지성은 단순히 정보와 지식을 생산하는 것만이 아니라 사회문제와 사건 및 이슈에 대한 일반시민의 자발적인 참여와 자유로운 의견개진으로 기존 전문가 중심의 권위주의 지식집단과 경합한다. 이는 시민 스스로를 민주적으로교육 단련하는 경험을 하게 된다. 바로 인터넷 집단지성의 민주주의적인 가치가발견되는 대목이기도 하다.
Abstract
Many people are interested in the development of the Internet and social change. Collective intelligence is a shared or group intelligence that emerges from the collaboration and competition of many individuals. Since studies of collective intelligence as connected to the internet have been evolving recently, some scholars are actively investigating collective intelligence in the cyberspace. To examine the dynamism and political implications of collective intelligence, I did a case study on the wikipedia.org. and the agora.media.daum.net. From that, some sorts of meaningful things are found. First, the characteristics of collective intelligence in the internet are determined by the power relations among intellectual groups. Second, there are two types of collective intelligence. One is agora and the other arena. Third, both of them are able to produce more reliable information and alternative sets of meanings in regard to social problems, issues and events, and thus contributing to the democratization of knowledge.
