Abstract
This article explores how sanitation functioned as a colonial knowledge and hegemony in India during the nineteenth century. By identifying disease and death with un-hygienic Indians and their superstitious beliefs as lack of civilization and dangerous other the British attempted to colonize the Indian body. The colonial ruler sought to decrease epidemic disease and British vulnerability through sanitary reforms, improving the living condition and social hygiene for the British residents, expecially the army members, and controlling the unsanitary nature of Indian environs and its people. Indians were not passive victims but participant in resisting and accepting the colonial sanitation. The prohibition of religious fairs and pilgrimages were resented. Acceptance to colonial hygiene was more visible with western educated elites than with rural folks. This was particularly true with regards to curative care. While the British boasted about their civilizing mision with sanitation its policy was not successful. The government neglected the sanitation for Indians due to financial constraints and political liability. The sanitation policy introduced by the colonial state was after all based on the ideas of self-legitimation of colonialism.
