Abstract
This study empirically analyzed how subjective and objective class status affects preferences for welfare programs according to contribution and beneficiary perspectives. The existing attitude studies on redistribution policies often simply analyzed the preferences for universalism and selectivism. The analysis considering both contribution and benefit methods is still insufficient. Therefore, this study is meaningful in that it analyzed how the subjective and objective class status affects the preference of the allocation method for welfare programs by reflecting the aspect of contribution. The results reveal that, in the case of subjective class status, the middle and high-income groups were less likely to consistently prefer need-based benefits to flat-rate benefits compared to the low-income class. On the other hand, in the case of objective hierarchical status, there was no consistent tendency. These results suggest that if welfare resources are allocated to low-income or socially disadvantaged based on means-test in the future, public support for income redistribution policies may decrease, resulting in the paradox of redistribution.
