진보적 의제 지지에서 주관적 정치이념의 일관성: 재분배 지지와 다양성 수용을 중심으로

진보와 보수의 가장 핵심적인 차이는 진보의 평등과 다양성에 대한 지향이다. 이러한 진보의 지향에서 재분배 지지와 다양성 수용은 핵심 의제들이다. 서구 사회에서 진보 정치가 분배 정치에서 정체성 정치로 이동하면서 분배의 문제를 간과하고 있다는 비판을 받고 있다. 그런 문제점이 한국에서도 나타나는지를 보기 위해 한국에서 진보적 의제들이 진보의 일관된 지지를 받고 있는지를 검토하고, 한국의 진보 정치에 대한 함의를 도출하고자 한다. 구체적으로 이 글은 재분배와 다양성 의제를 지지하는 데 있어 주관적 정치이념이 일관되게 중요한지 살펴본다. 한국종합사회조사(KGSS 2021) 자료를 활용한 다중회귀분석 결과를 보면, 정치적 진보성은 재분배 지지보다 다양성 수용에서 유의성이 더 뚜렷하다. 즉 정치적 진보성이 진보적 의제들 일반에 일관된 관련성을 보이는 것은 아니다. 이러한 비일관성에 대한 해석과 성찰이 필요하다.
Abstract
The most fundamental difference between progressives and conservatives lies in progressives’ orientation toward equality and diversity. Support for redistribution and acceptance of diversity are core agendas within this progressive orientation. In Western societies, progressive politics has been criticized for overlooking the issue of distribution as it shifts from distribution politics to identity politics. To examine whether such problems emerge in Korea, this article investigates whether progressive agendas receive consistent support from progressives in Korea and draws implications for Korean progressive politics. Specifically, this article examines whether subjective political ideology consistently matters in supporting redistribution and diversity agendas. Results from multiple regression analysis using data from the Korean General Social Survey (KGSS 2021) reveal that political progressiveness is more significantly associated with acceptance of diversity than with support for redistribution. In other words, political progressiveness does not consistently correlate with progressive agendas in general. Further interpretation and reflection are needed to understand this inconsistency.
