Abstract
The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 12(4), 121-141. This paper discusses several different but related asymmetries attested in the contrasts between attributive/ restrictive and predicative uses of adjectives and definite descriptions of Korean and English. Based on a hypothesis that speed is weighed more heavily in identifying referents than in predication, it attempts to provide a functional explanation to the asymmetries. Moreover, it proposes the notions of restriction and predication as a crucial functional contrast in language.
