Abstract
This paper motivates the functional distinction between restriction and predication as a key linguistic factor in analyzing syntactic constructions. We examine adjectives and definite descriptions in English and Korean, focusing on their asymmetries found between restrictive/attributive and predicative uses. An account for the asymmetries is proposed with a hypothesis that speed, rather than accuracy, is weighed more heavily in identifying referents than in predicating identified referents. Then, taking pseudo-relative clause constructions, we examine previous analyses and show how the functional notions of restriction and predication can help analyze the constructions as relative clauses rather than noun complement constructions.
