Abstract

To construct a Korean thesaurus, the definition of a thesaurus should be declared first. However, the existing definition, ‘More than two words that have different word forms but a similar meaning’, alone cannot be used as a criterion of distinguishing whether a word is a synonym or not. This paper defines a synonym as ‘a word that is interchangeable with another word in the same text, maintaining a similar relationship in meaning’. Especially, among synonyms, it defined ‘a word that can only be interchangeable in an example sentence after presenting the example sentence’ as ‘a contextual synonym’. According to these definitions, a work of finding synonyms of every entry word in 『Yonsei Korean dictionary』 was done. As a result, there were some words whose synonyms were not found. If you look at the characteristics of these isolated words, however, nouns in word class; an alphabet, auxiliary verbs, assistant verbs, suffixes, prefixes, formative stuff, determiners, compound nouns, etc in part of speech; and foreign words in word type had a relatively high possibility of being an isolated word, that is to say not having synonyms.
