초록

This paper looks at the diglossic phenomena in Indonesia from two perspectives. One is an intra-language perspective which compares Indonesian high variety with Indonesian low variety based on Ferguson(1959, 1972, 1991). The other is an inter-language perspective which compares Indonesian with local languages based on Fishman(1967, 1971, 1972). This paper also discusses the demise of local languages in Indonesia depending upon ‘bilingualism without diglossia’ that was introduced by Fishman. In addition, this paper emphasizes the necessity of education for Indonesian low variety in higher education.
