Abstract
Although organic food consumption has been well recognized as well-being oriented consumption behavior, there is a lack of research that empirically examines how consumers’ behavior of consuming organic foods contributes to their subjective well-being. To fill this gap, the current study intends to empirically examine if organic food consumption positively influences consumers’ subjective well-being through satisfaction with food-related life. Participants were recruited from the panel members pre-recruited by a market research firm. Eligible participants were primary grocery shoppers in the household living in the Republic of Korea at the age of 19 or older who had ever purchased organic foods. A total of 420 questionnaires were obtained through self-administered online surveys. To analyze the data, partial least squares(PLS) path modeling with SmartPLS 3.0 software was applied. The results showed that H1 was supported based on the finding that organic food consumption was positively related to satisfaction with food-related life. Full support for H2 was also found: satisfaction with food-related life had a significant impact on physical, psychological, and social well-being. With regard to H3, the relationship between organic food consumption and physical well-being was fully mediated by satisfaction with food-related life. In addition, partial mediation effects of satisfaction with food-related life were found on the relationship between organic food consumption and psychological well-being, and the relationship between organic food consumption and social well-being. This finding is important because it makes us to better understand how organic food consumption contributes to consumers' subjective well-being. Consumers who consume organic foods more often are likely to have higher satisfaction with food-related life, which in turn increases their physical, psychological, and social well-being.
