Abstract

The current research investigated consumer behavior on social media, especially hashtag usage on Instagram focusing on social media as a self-presentation tool. Based on previous research on implicit self-theories, we suggest that entity theorists who believe that traits are unchangeable and fixed are more likely to rely on external tools for self-presentation and thus are more likely to use more hashtags on Instagram compared to incremental theorists who believe traits are malleable and can be increased through effort. We tested our hypothesis with hashtags used with actual posts on Instagram and also documented the moderating effect of social media familiarity. Our findings contribute to literature on social media by examining social media as a self-presentation tool and discuss managerial implications for marketing communication.
