Abstract
Although consumers’ interests in sustainable consumption have increased as the importance of sustainability has been highlighted after the COVID-19 crisis, few consumers actually practice sustainable consumption. Since limited studies examined those factors impeding sustainable consumption, the present study aims to address constraints of sustainable consumption based on consumer perceptions and investigate the relationships between identified constraining factors and sustainable consumption behaviors including purchase, usage, and disposal. We conducted a survey with 339 participants and confirmatory factor analysis to find factors impeding sustainable consumption. The results show that there are six constraining factors: helplessness, difficulty, indifference, distrust, lack of infrastructure, and cost. Additionally, helplessness, indifference, cost, and difficulty were negatively correlated with purchase and usage consumption behavior, respectively. For disposal behavior, indifference, helplessness, and distrust showed negative relationships. These findings enhance the understanding constraining factors impeding sustainable consumption and provide practical implications for increasing sustainable consumption.
