초록
The purpose of this study is to explore how the meaning extensions of body part terms ‘head’ and ‘face’ in English, and elkwul 'face' and meli 'head' in Korean have occurred. First, it is claimed that the meaning extension of the terms is based on the embodiment of experiences through the cognitive processes of metaphor and metonymy. Second, the differences in the meaning extensions of the two terms may be explained in terms of the cognitive process of spatial orientation. The meaning extension of the term ‘head’ and meli 'head' mirrors the UP orientation, while ‘face’ and elkwul 'face' FRONT orientation. Third, the term elkwul 'face' and its synonyms are compared in terms of their associative meanings. It is claimed that the synonyms have associative meanings of either negative value or quality and abstractness, when they are compared to the term elkwul 'face'.
