초록
English subordinate clauses can be divided into six kinds of constructions according to their semantic types—concessive, temporal, conditional, reason, result, and comparative. The purpose of this paper is to investigate eight types of English concessive constructions within the framework of Construction-based HPSG. In particular, we show that the tight interactions between the lexicon and constructional constraints can account for complex properties of these eight types of English concessive constructions—canonical concessive clause construction, scalar concessive clause construction, alternative concessive clause construction, universal concessive clause construction, no matter concessive construction, for all concessive construction, inverted concessive clause construction, and non-finite concessive clause construction.
