Abstract
Augustne’s De trinitate, a masterpiece written for over twenty years, reveals the theological development of St. Augustine. De trinitate demonstrates Augustine’s introspective theology crafted by both his biblical knowledge and philosophical intuition. The paper investigates how the concept of love is utilized to construct Augustine’s trinitarian idea. After the introduction, the second chapter explains the conceptual relationship between intellect and love. Augustine emphasizes a theory of divine illumination and the divine presence in a human soul. The third chapter examines the divine love and the divine goodness revealed in the nature and the world. God as the Love created the world as essentially good. Love, the most beautiful creation of God, should be pursued by human souls. The fourth chapter studies a trinitarian idea of love. Augustine claims that human souls have a trinity of mind, love, and knowledge. Likewise, God has a trinity of love: the Father is the lover, the Son is the beloved, the Holy Spirit is the bond of love. In conclusion, the paper concludes that Augustine tries to see the trinity - the most mysterious secret of the divinity - by gazing the mystery of a human soul.
