옥스퍼드 대학교와 연세대학교의 비교를 통해 본 기독교 대학의 정체성과 학원 선교적 사명에 대한 소고

본 논문의 목적은 세계 최초의 기독교 대학인 옥스퍼드 대학교와 국내최초의 기독교 대학인 연세대학교를 사례 분석 방식으로 선별하여 이 두대학의 역사, 학문성, 교육 운영 방식, 발전의 양상, 세속화에 대한 반응, 교훈(校訓)의 적용, 사회적 참여 모습을 서로 비교 분석함으로써 현대 기독교 대학의 정체성을 점검하고 기독교 대학의 시대적 사명을 확인하며 앞으로의 학원선교 방향을 타진해보는 것이다. 구체적으로, 우선 두 대학의 역사비교를 통하여 국내외 최초의 기독교 대학이 지니는 역사적 상징성의 의미를 되새겨보고, 이러한 상징성을 지닌 두 대학이 기독교 정신을 바탕으로하여 어떠한 학문성과 교육 운영 시스템을 구축해왔는지를 분석해보며, 대내외적으로 대학을 발전시키는 데에 있어서 기독교적 정체성을 어떻게 유지해왔는지를 점검해보고, 세속화의 물결 속에서 각자의 기독교적 교훈을 어떤 방식으로 계승 발전시켜왔는지를 비평적으로 검토해본 후, 두 대학이사회를 향해 어떠한 역할을 감당하면서 정의로운 기독교적 목소리를 발해왔는지를 살펴본다. 역사적, 사회적 상징성이 있는 두 기독교 대학의 비교 분석을 통하여 본 논문이 기대하는 것은 두 대학의 사례 분석으로부터 시작하여 더 많은 국내, 국외 기독교 대학들이 여러 가지 다양한 측면에서 비교분석됨으로써 현대 기독교 대학의 정체성과 학원선교의 사명과 방향에 대한 논의가 더욱 폭넓어지는 것이다.
Abstract
This article selects Oxford University as the first Christian university in the world and Yonsei University as the first Christian university in Korea in a method of case-study, and compares them in history, academy, education system, development, secularization, motto, and social participation. Through this comparison, it seeks to diagnose the identity of Christian university, confirm the importance of its social role and vocation, and search for the sound direction of campus ministry. Concretely, it affirms the historical symbolism of the two universities as the oldest Christian universities, and examines how they have operated education systems based on Christian spirit and developed them with maintaining Christian identity, how they have realized their own Christian mottos in the flow of secularization, and how they have pursued social justice and played a sound Christian role in the world from a critical perspective. What this article anticipates by this examination is that this kind of comparing study of Christian universities continues to be proposed and applied to other Christian universities, and results in deeper conversations on the identity of Christian university and further dialogues on the direction of campus ministry.
