문화적 소통이 절실히 요구되는 대학채플: 영화설교의 가능성

Abstract

Movies, arguably the most effective medium of communication in today’s society, are needed to be incorporated into the university chapel setting due to two reasons. Firstly, a common ground can be quickly established between the preacher and students via the use of movies or related multimedia, which can lead to a higher level of interaction between the two parties. Secondly, due to today’s continuing trend of secularization (not secularism), success in the university chapel depends not on the rigid adherence to a single type of liturgy but instead on making a dialogue with the contemporary culture. By avoiding such action, the university’s efforts to promote evangelization, not to mention the efforts made by the Korean church in general, will not progress to a significant degree(nor even can survive) that they might suggest Gospel vision to the students. One of the most useful features of films in relation to preaching is that they are rich in narratives that vividly portray the real human condition. Furthermore, the playing of certain films provides a familiar context to which the students can easily identify with, In other words, the preacher may easily find a way of contact with the students. The modern audience is not growing numb to the Gospel per se, but to the dogged prejudices and views of the older generation whom argue that God can be met only within their own austere religious frame, while at the same time, discouraging any sort of novel ideas. Unlike the older generation, however, the younger generation has become more receptive to emotional and delicate concepts, and so they require the appropriate settings in which they can effectively and comfortably communicate.
