초록

The phenomena of revival has a few characteristics: powerful exercise of the Holy Spirit, proclamation of the word of God, conviction of sin and repentance, transformation of multitudes of people, and rapid growth of churches. These characteristics appeared also in the Great Revival in Pyeongyang a hundred year ago.The New Testament shares the essential features of revival as the root of all revivals. Since revival occurs in the communities, our discussion will be focused on Luke-Acts and Paul's letters. Luke's gospel emphasizes the Holy Spirit more than any other gospel and relates it to the whole ministry of Jesus. Especially, the sermon in the synagogue of Nazareth shows the paradigmatic feature on the present reality of the kingdom of God. Acts is the book which discloses most prominently the characteristics of revival, repeatedly showing that the power of the Holy Spirit is closely related to the expansion of the gospel. Also we can find the socio-ethical role of the Holy Spirit in Acts. On the other hand, Paul's letters take the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as the core of gospel, and emphasize the soteriological-ethical aspect of the Holy Spirit's work. Furthermore, they aim to build up one and whole community, embracing both Jews and Gentiles as "the body of Christ" for revival. As a conclusion, we can summarize seven characteristics and messages of revival in the New Testament, especially in Luke-Acts and Paul's letters: 1) revival focuses on aspects of awakening and renewal, and emphasizes the character change; 2) it grows in the soil of suffering; 3) it shows repeating pattern in history; 4) it is more concerned with vision than the number of converts; 5) it underlines the transcendental and alternative dimension instead of political one; 6) it falls on the oppressed and secluded; and 7) it spreads with the stories of changed people's lives.
