기독교 예배만큼 전통과 현대의 조화를 필요로 하는 분야가 있을까? 기독교인들이 드리는 예배는 예배형식(liturgy)에 의해 크게 규정되고 표현된다. 따라서 그 형식이 과연 기독교의 본질과 내용에 부합하는지, 그리고 오늘의시대적인 요청과 가능성을 동시에 충족시켜 줄 수 있는지에 대한 고려가항상 필요하다. 예배의 역사를 일별해 보면 전통이란 항상 양날의 칼처럼작용해 왔다. 즉 교회공동체의 개혁이 필요했던 시기에는 전통의 혁신이, 그리고 교회공동체가 세속주의에 물들어 있을 때에는 전통으로의 복귀가강조되었다. 전통에 대한 왜곡여부가 교회개혁과 맞물려 있었던 셈이다. 예배의 문제는 예전의 형식에 현대성을 어느 정도까지 끌어들여야 할 것이냐, 다시 말해 전통을 어떻게 처리하고 다룰 것인가가 핵심과제였다. 예배의 역사를 고찰해 볼 때 기독교 예배의 정형(standard)을 우리는 어디서 어떻게 찾아 볼 수 있는가? 아마 이 질문에 대한 답변은 거의 불가능하리라 본다. 다만 우리는 의례들을 표준화하기 위한 노력들을 통해 ‘동방교회적인 표준’, ‘로마가톨릭적인 표준’, ‘개신교적인 표준’ 정도로만 윤곽을 그릴수 있을 것이다. 이 글은 기독교 역사에서 예배의 강력한 변화들이 일어났던 시기를 선택하여 각 시기마다 예전의 관심이 어디에 있었는지를 고찰해 보려 한다. 우리는 예배의 역사적인 흐름들을 살펴봄으로써 예배의 주요 구성요소들에 대한이해 및 그 표현양식이 어떻게 변화, 발전해 왔는지를 알 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 기독교 예배의 역사적 근거와 다양한 실례들을 확보할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 예배에서 혁신하고 변화해야 하는 부분은 무엇이고, 계승하고 보존해야 할 요소는 무엇인지 성찰할 수 있는 계기를 마련할 수 있으리라고 본다.
Abstract
This paper studies the paradigm shift in the history of Christian worship. This study focuses on the harmony between tradition and modernism in church liturgy. Christians worship offering is largely defined and expressed by the liturgy. That form is indeed consistent with the nature and content of Christianity, and the consideration of the main principles of Christianity. The priority is to concentrate on how we can reflect modernity in the form of the traditional liturgy. In other words, the key challenge is to focus on how we can handle tradition in association with modernity. Where can we find an orthodox form of Christian worship? The answer to this question seems almost impossible. However, we are able to draw “Orthodox standards”, “Roman Catholic standards”, or “Protestant standards.” This paper examines the character of the paradigm shift that took place in church, regarding Christian worship. We will be able to obtain an understanding of historical grounds and look at various examples of how the worship expression form has changed. We can also explore the major components of the service, by looking at the historical flow of worship as well. In addition, this paper can provide an opportunity to reflect on what parts of worship need to be innovated and changed.
