서구 주요 개신교회 예배의 현황과 그 비교 연구

20세기 후반에 서구의 교회들은 신, 구교를 막론하고 그들의 예배를 크게 개혁하였다. 그 주요 특징들을 살펴보면 주요 개신교들 간에는 물론이고 심지어 로마 가톨릭과도 예배의 구조와 내용 등에 있어서 상당히 공통적인 모습을 띠고 있다는 점이다. 그 이유로는 우선 오늘날 매우 개방적 환경 속에서 상호 간의 벽을 넘어 활발한 교류를 갖게 된 점도 있지만 초대교회를 비롯한 오랜 전통에 대한 보다 깊은 연구의 결과를 들 수 있을 것이다. 그런데 이런 개혁적 노력으로 나타난 통일된 결과들이 반드시 최종적이며 항상 가장 무오하고 확정적인 모델이라고 말할 수는 없다. 왜냐하면 긴 역사의 관점에서 보자면 그것 역시 특정 시대와 정황에서 비롯된 산물이라는 한계를 피할 수 없기 때문이다. 본 논문은 이런 입장을 가지고 오늘날 주요 개신교회의 대표적 주자들이라 할 수 있는 미국연합감리교회, 미국장로교회, 미국루터교회, 미국성공회의 예배 현황을 살펴보았다. 특히 이들의 개정 배경과 실제 예배 순서 등을 검토해 보고 이에 대해 (1) 예배의 구조와 형식의 관점 (2) 예배의 요소와 순서의 관점 (3) 예배의 성경적, 역사적, 및 신학적 관점 (4) 기타 등의 주제로 나누어 그 각각의 긍정적 의미 및 비평적 제안들을 다루어 봄으로써 시대와 상황을 넘어 예배가 지향해야 하는 바를 모색하였다. 오늘의 기독교 공동체는 주요 전통 안에서 구체화된 예배의 신학과 실제에 대해 주목하고 그것을 존중하며 귀를 기울이되 동시에 끊임없는 성찰을 통해 시대와 상황에 대해 언제고 적응해야 한다는 정신을 가지고 예배의 발전적 방안의 제시를 위해 노력하여야 할 것이다. 그렇게 할 때 예배는 비로소 하나님과 인간 사이의 만남의 주요 수단으로서의 기능을 충분히 다할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
In the late 20th century, both Protestant churches and Catholic churches have revised their worship services in a large scale. One of the most characteristic feature is that they are all very common in the structure and contents of their worship. The reason of such convergence is first not only an active interaction between two circles under the open-hearted atmosphere of the contemporary world but also profound study about the worships of the earliest church today. However it is not proper to say that these model of worship has no errors ever and so a final model for ages to come as well, because these models are also inevitable to be regarded as products of particular time and context. From this point of view, this article deals with features in present worship books of United Methodist Churches, Presbyterian churches in USA, Lutheran churches of America, and Episcopal Church of America, specially focused on the structure, forms, elements and their arrangement. Today's Christian community needs not only to pay attention to theology and practice of worship services that have been articulated by denomination and tradition and pay the tributes to their authority but also put constant reflection and examination into them and then try to provide new directions and insights under the spirit that worship should be applicable to any situation and time. It is because by doing so, the worship could function enough to be the effective media beween God and His people.
