본 논문은 종교개혁 500주년을 맞이하여, 종교개혁자들이 바울의 율법을 얼마나 정확히 수용하고 있는 점검하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 종교개혁자와 바울은 다른 역사적 상황 가운데 율법에 대한 이해를 피력했지만, 양자 사이 에는 비교를 위하여 충분한 접점이 존재한다. 이른바 종교개혁자들이 주장 한 바 율법의3가지 이해가 얼마나 바울의 본문에서 그근거를 찾아볼 수 있는지 추적하는 것이다. 율법의 제1용법, 곧 세속 사회를 위한 목적은 교회 밖의 죄인들을 도덕적으로 교화하기 위한 것이다. 제2용법은 율법을 통해서 인간의 죄를 드러내고 회개시키는 기능과 관계가 있다. 아울러 제3용법은 구원을 받은 크리스천이 은혜 가운데 살아가도록 실천적, 윤리적 지침의 역할을 수행한다. 바울은 이처럼 조직적인 율법 이해를 전개하지는 않았지 만, 그리스도 사건 이전과 구원 당시, 나아가 구원받은 이후에 이르기까지 일련의 기능을 염두에 두었음을 알 수 있다. 사도에게 있어서 율법은 그 자체로 구원을 가져오지는 못하나, 믿음을 통해 구원받는데 있어 결코 부정 적이라 할 수 없는 나름의 역할을 수행한다. 요컨대 종교개혁자와 바울의 율법 이해 사이에는 명확한 연속성을 발견할 수 있다고 하겠다.
Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to examine if the Reformers cor- rectly understood Paul in terms of the Law. As is widely recog- nized, the Reformers came up with three usages of Law: 1. the Law as the one guiding morally the secular world aright (primus usus legis), and the Law which is to reveal each one’s sins and to let him repent (secundus usus legis). And it has finally the third usage which a converted Christian can now ethically live up to (tertius usus legis). Although Paul did not show a systematic understanding of the Law as the Reformers did, we can confirm that the apostle represented the Law before the Christ event, at the time of salvation, and after the salvation. Our exe- getical observations lead us to assume that the Reformers appropriately un- derstood Paul’s concept of Law. Though it does not enable us to reach the salvation, it has a function not to be judged as negative: the recognition of sins.
