바울이 사용한 수사의 관점으로 본 고린도 교회의 방언 현상- 고린도전서 14장 13-19절을 중심으로 -

고린도전서에 나타나는 방언의 정체에 대해서 우리는 정확하게 말할 수 없다. 다만 바울이 고린도전서에서 말하는 방언은 인간의 언어가 아니라, 하나님과 비밀을 나누는 신령한 언어라고 말할 수 있을 뿐이다. 적어도 바울 과 고린도 교인들에게 방언은 그런 것이었다. 그래야 고린도 교회의 문제를 설명할 수 있고, 그와 관련된 바울의 해결책을 이해할 수 있다. 방언 통역의 필요성 강조에 대한 내용이 본고의 본문인 14:13-19에 집중적으로 담겨있지 만, 크게는 14장 전체를 통해 말하고자 하는 것이라 보아도 무방하다. 그가 장문에 걸쳐 통역의 필요성을 말하는 이유는 바울을 아는 모두가 잘 알고 있듯이, 교회의 화평을 위해서이고, 화평을 이루고자 하는 모습이 그리스도 인의 모습이 되도록 하기 위함이다. 바울의 개인적인 성격이 어떠했을 지에 대해서 우리는 알 수 없지만, 적어도 그의 편지 안에서 그리스도교는 이타적 이고 평화적인 종교로 인식되길 원했고, 그렇게 가르쳤다. 본고에서 다루는 고린도전서의 ‘방언’ 주제 역시 그러한 바울의 성향을 명백히 보여주는 부분 인데, 바울의 편지 내에서 그가 사용하는 특유의 수사 기술들을 통해 우리는 그것들을 알아차릴 수 있다. 필자는 고린도전서 12-14장의 맥락을 통해 유 추 가능한 고린도 교회의 정황과 본문에서 나타나는 바울의 수사적 표현들을 기초로 하여 고린도전서 14장 13-19절의 정확한 내용 이해와 본문에 담 긴 바울의 의도를 찾고자 한다.
Abstract
This study aims to understand the contents and the intentions of Paul in 1 Cor. 14.13-19 with focus on the meaning and usage of the glossolalia. Despite the uncertain meaning and usage of the glossolalia in 1 Corinthians, it is sure for Paul and the Corinthian that the glossolalia is not a human lan- guage, but a spiritual language to share secrets with God. The emphasis on the need for the glossolalia in 1 Cor 14.13-19 needs to be considered in the light of Paul’s rhetorical intention embedded in the whole chapter 14 of 1 Cor, which is concerned about the peace of the church in Corinth. Paul pro- vides the pastoral advice for the Corinthian to be peace-makers. Paul’s teach- ing of the glossolalia reflects on the unique rhetorical skills to teach that his church should be an altruistic and peaceful group. This study explains how such a rhetorical intention of Paul fits with the literary context of chapters 12-14.
