Abstract
Is Paul a rhetor? In other words, can we approach the Pauline Epistles from the point of view of Classical Rhetoric? It is not easy to resolve this issue, as there are contradicting opinions involved in this debate. The gap between Paul’s narrative of his own life and the facts of his adult life seems to strengthen the tension between the two poles of the debate. Paul’s autobiographical statements make it impossible to think of him as a rhetor. He confesses he was educated through Jewish pedagogical methods and was a strict Hebrew. As a result, he did not receive a Greco-Roman education. This leads to the conclusion that it is impossible to approach the Pauline Epistles through the prism of Classical Rhetoric. However, Paul’s adult life reveals a different picture, as he was never free of the influence of Greco-Roman culture. In particular, he was thoroughly open to Greco-Roman education, at the center of which Rhetoric was situated. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to say that Paul was unfamiliar with the rhetorical tradition. In this paper I advocate the view that Paul was indeed a rhetor, and that it is possible to approach the Pauline Epistles on the base of Classical Rhetoric. Outwardly, Paul’s autobiographical statements show that he didn’t accept the role of Rhetoric in life and in education, specifically that of sophistical Rhetoric. Sophists had caused problems to communities such as the Corinths, so Paul rejected the tenets of this form of Rhetoric, but not of Rhetoric per se. Rather, he used rhetorical strategies like irony to defeat sophistical Rhetoric. He must have assimilated this strategy directly and indirectly through the rhetorical education he underwent in the process of his growth. Paul was a great rhetor, and the Pauline Epistles are an appropriate subject of rhetorical inquiry.
