본 논문은 1세기 로마 사회의 초대 교회 구성원들이 다양한 사회 경제적 계층으로 구성되었기에 이들의 모임이 도무스와 인슐라에서 이루어졌다는 것을 가정한다. 폼페이, 헤라큘레니움, 오스티아의 유적지에서 확인된 로마 가옥들은 초대 교회의 모임이 도무스의 트리클리니움(아트리움 혹은 페리 스타일)과 인슐라의 메디아눔을 중심으로 이루어졌다는 사실을 확인시켜 준다. 초대 교회의 모임은 빵을 떼는 공동 식사를 포함하고 있었기에 일상의 가사 노동을 감당하던 여성(노예)들의 역할을 돋보이게 만들었다. 공동 식 사를 준비하고 섬기는 과정에서 주도적인 역할을 감당한 여성들이 교회에서 새로운 위치를 확인받게 된 것이다. 1세기 중반 차츰 그녀들의 역할에 대한 우려가 노골적으로 표현되었고, 1세기 후반 성만찬은 공동식사와 분리되어 성례로서의 의미만을 갖게 되었다. 예배에서 공동식사가 사라지며 교회는 가옥이 아닌 곳과 기존의 가옥을 개조한 곳에서 모이기 시작했고(“도무스 에클레시아 시기”), 공동 식사와 성만찬을 준비하고 섬기던 여성의 역할이 필요 없게 되었다. 신약성서의 가훈표는 여성을 주체적이고 능동적인 권면 의 대상으로 전제하지만, 1세기 말 이후의 가훈표는 여성을 객체화시키고 배움의 대상으로만 간주한다. 1세기 말부터 시작된 도무스 에클레시아 시기 는 변화한 교회의 공간에서 더 이상 성만찬을 도울 수 없게 된 여성들이 소외되기 시작한 시기였다.
Abstract
This study presupposes that the early church consists of various econom- ic classes whose worship was gathered either in a domus or an insula in the first century Roman society. The archeological excavations in Pompeii, Herculanium, Ostia indicate that the meeting of the early church was gath- ered either in a triclinium of a domus (atrium or peristyle) or a medianum of an insula. Since the meeting includes the communal meal, the women (and female slaves) play a significant role in such a meal setting. They are the ones who prepare for the Lord’s Table and help the bread and the cup to be shared. From the middle of the first century, some expose their concern for the active role of women in their churches. In the end of the first century, the Lord’s Table was separated from the communal meal in the worship. Since then, the church does not need a place for cooking and sharing the communal meal. The period of domus ecclesiae(the renovated domus for the usage of the church) began. At the same time, the church needs no help from women for the communal meal and the Lord’s Table. While women were regarded as the ones who deserve the direct advice from the writers of the household codes in the New Testament, women were objectified as the ones who need men’s direction and teaching in the household codes of apostolic fathers’ writings. The domus ecclesiae period shows not only how the church-space has changed, but also why women lost their active roles in the early church.
