19세기 중반이후 계속되었던 초기교회 문서들의 발견 및 출간은 학자들로 하여금 초기교회의 예배에 대한 이해의 폭을 확장시킬 수 있었을 뿐만 아니라, 성만찬의 기원에 대한 연구를 확장시켰다. 또한 예배회복운동과 교회일치운동은 성만찬 기원에 대한 연구를 더욱 활발히 일어나게 만들어준 시대적 배경이 되어주었다. 초기교회의 성만찬은 신학, 내용, 형식에 있어서 다양성을 그 특징으로 지니고 있었다. 성만찬의 기원을 연구하는 학자들 사이에서 이 다양성에 대한 해석은 크게 두 가지 흐름으로 나뉘었다. 먼저 전통적 신학자들은 성만찬이 마지막 만찬에서 비롯되었다는 학문적 전제에 대한 강한 확신을 갖고 있었다. 그 확신은 그들로 하여금 공관복음서와 고린도전서 11장에 기록된 마지막 만찬 기사에서 성만찬의 원형을 찾도록 인도하였다. 그렇게 마련된 성만찬 원형의 틀에 부합하지 않는 초기교회의 식사 행위들에 대해 그들은 성만찬이 아닌 아가페, 이단적 성만찬, 또는 지역교회의 잘못 시행된 성만찬으로 인식하였다. 하지만 최근 20여 년 동안 진행된 성만찬 기원에 대한 연구들은 초기교회 성만찬의 다양성에 대해 보다 객관적이고 학문적인 접근을 시도하였다. 이 연구들은 마지막 만찬의 표지들을 담고 있지 않은 초기교회의 식사 전통들이 성만찬이었으며, 그 기원은 예수의 식사 행위와 밀접한 관련이 있었음을 논증하였다. 이에 본 논문은 전통적 관점에서 이루어진 성만찬의 기원에 대한 연구들과 최근 20여 년간 강력하게 제기된 성만찬의 기원에 대한 새로운 관점들을 정리하고 분석할 것이다. 이러한 작업을 통해 본 논문은 여전히 마지막 만찬 일변도인 한국교회 성만찬 신학의 확장과 실제적 갱신을 모색하려 한다.
Abstract
The great discovery and publishment of the early church documents in the nineteenth century enabled scholars to broaden their appreciation of the early church worship and observe more closely the origin of the eucharist. The liturgical movement and the ecumenical movement played an important role in promoting research on the studies of the origin of the eucharist. The eucharist of the early church could be characterized by the diversity in theology and practice. There have been two major trends in scholars studying the origin of the eucharist. Some scholars based on the traditional eucharistic understanding believed that the eucharist was originated from the last supper. That belief made them try to reconstruct the prototype of the eucharist through finding something in common in the so-called last supper stories (Matthew 26; Mark 14; Luke 22; 1 Corinthians 11). They recognized the early church meal practices which were inconsistent with the prototype as an agape, a heretic meal practice, or a eucharist conducted in a wrong way by a minor local church. However, in the past two decades the traditional eucharistic understanding has been challenged by a new approach. This new approach attempts to analyze objectively and scientifically the diversity of the eucharist of the early church. Based on the new approach, scholars prove that the varied meal practices of the early church, in spite of having few characteristics corresponding to the last supper, were the eucharist and deeply related to the meal practices of Jesus. This article will study traditional point of view of the origin of the eucharist and new attempts in the past two decades to rethink the eucharistic diversity of the early church and the meals of Jesus. Lastly, this article will explore a way of renewing the eucharistic theology and practice of Korean church through the new perspective on the origin of the eucharist.
