1세기 교회 예배를 통해 본 현대 디너 처치 예배의 발전과 신학적, 목회적 의의 고찰

초록

본 연구는 현대 북미의 디너 처치 운동의 역사와 예배의 특징을 소개하고, 1세기 교회 예배 연구를 통해 디너 처치 예배의 신학적 기반을 논하며, 탈기독교 시대에 디너 처치 예배가 갖는 신학적, 목회적 의의와 한국 교회에서의 적용점을 제시하는 것이 목적이다. 북미 대도시의 소외된 이들 속에서 연대와 환대의 잔치를 벌이는 21세기 디너 처치 예배와 가난한 보통 사람들로 이루어진 1세기 교회가 그레코-로만 만찬의 변용인 성찬 중심의 식사 예배를 통해 에클레시아로서 정체성을 세워나가는 모습을 살펴보면서, 이교도화된 탈기독교 시대의 대안적 공동체 예배로서의 디너 처치의 의의를 논할 것이다. 연구 방법으로는, 디너 처치 운동의 제로 그라운드로 여겨지는 뉴욕 브루클린에 있는 진보적 계열의 성 리디아의 디너 처치와 씨애틀에 있는 복음주의적 계열의 커뮤니티 디너스를 대상으로 삼고, 다양한 문헌 및 인터넷 자료 조사 그리고 온라인 세미나 참여 및 서신 교환 등을 진행하였다. 1세기 교회 예배는 당시 그레코-로만 콜레기아와 만찬 문화를 연구해온 신약학계의 최근 연구 동향을 반영한 예배신학적 연구를 진행하였다. 한국 교회에서의 디너 처치 적용 문제에 대해서는 인구절벽과 포스트 코로나 시대의 한국 교회의 위기와 대안적 방안을 논하는 논문과 신문 자료들을 이용하였다. 본 연구는 Ⅱ장에서는 성 리디아의 디너 처치와 씨애틀의 공동체 디너스를 주된 대상으로 현대 디너 처치 운동의 역사와 예배 특징을 살펴보았고, Ⅲ장에서는 1세기 교회의 그레코-로만 문화적 배경과 예배의 특징을 주제로 콜레기아와 유대교 회당 사이에 놓인 교회의 정체성 및 그레코-로만 만찬과 식사 예배의 관계성을 논했다. Ⅳ장에서는 현대의 디너 처치와 1세기 교회 예배 연구 결과를 바탕으로 디너 처치가 탈기독교 시대에 갖는 의의를 논하면서, 이러한 디너 처치를 연구하면서 갖게 된 질문들과 한국 교회에서 디너 처치를 실행할 때에 고려해야 할 점들을 다루었다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is (1) to introduce the history of the modern North American dinner church movement and the characteristics of its worship, (2) to discuss the theological foundation of dinner church worship through the study of church worship in the first century, and (3) to present the theological and pastoral significance of dinner church worship in the post-Christian era and its application in Korean churches. The present paper will discuss the significance of the dinner church as alternative worship community in secularized Western society. The discussion is built on the two studies: the 21st-century dinner church as a feast of solidarity and hospitality among the marginalized in large cities in North America, and the 1st-century church composed of the impoverished establishing their identity as ekklesia through the eucharist-centered meal service, a transformation of the Greco-Roman banquet. For the research on the 21st-century dinner churches, the study focuses on the two churches pioneering the dinner church movement: the progressive St. Lydia's Dinner Church in Brooklyn, New York, and the evangelical Community Dinners in Seattle, Washington. My study surveys available literature, the proceedings of online seminars, and personal correspondence with church leadership. For the 1st-century study, I conduct a study on liturgical theology reflecting recent research trends in New Testament academia on the Greco-Roman collegia and banquet culture. Finally, to apply the study to the context of the Korean churches, I survey articles and reports addressing the Korean church's crisis in the era of the demographic cliff and post-Covid19 and suggest alternative measures. In this article, Section II examines the history of the modern dinner church movement and the characteristics of its worship, focusing on St. Lydia's Dinner Church in Brooklyn and the Community Dinners in Seattle. Examining the Greco-Roman cultural background and the characteristics of worship of the 1st-century church, Section III discusses the church's identity in relation to collegia and synagogue, and the relationship between Greco-Roman banquet and meal worship service. Based on the research results, Section IV discusses the significance of the dinner church in the post-Christian era, poses questions arising from conducting the research, and mentions several points for implementing dinner church in the Korean context.
