Abstract
This article discusses the Korean translation of Galatians 2:14b-15. Galatians 2:14b-15 contains Paul’s severe rebuke to Peter and occupies a crucial position in the Corpus Paulinum. However many translations on these verses are not enough sufficient to deliver the exact meaning of the author’s intention and seemingly inaccurate in the flow of autobiographical Narratio contextually. In that regard, this study surveys the translations of Galatians 2:14b-15 from many languages (Latin, English, German, especially Korean) and examines the good and bad points of those translations. Through the analyzing and review of vocabularies, the structure of sentences, and the context of the text, as a result, this article reports that in Galatians 2:14b some (Korean) translations could convey the author’s intention without a loss, but in Gal 2:15 it still needs revision. Eventually, this article tries to suggest the appropriate new Korean translation, expecting to solve present problems, that the traditional translations brought up. Instead of the traditional translation, for example, “We Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles (KJV)”, this article suggests a new Korean translation of Gal 2:15, as an affordable revision: “Even though we are born in Jews, not in gentiles, but we are also sinners.” This article explains that the suggested new translation corresponds more closely with Galatians and with other Pauline texts. The suggested new translation may be unprecedented and exceptional, but it is worthy to reconsider as a substitute translation because it matches better than the traditional one in the text and context of Galatians.
