Abstract

After the publication of Marcel Mauss’s work, Essai sur le don, was published, gift-giving has become a controversial topic in various academic fields. Although women are an important resource to activate a gift economy, their perspectives have been excluded from the gift debate. Hélène Cixous summons women as active agents of the gift economy based on Jacques Derrida’ notion of the gift. However, the notion of pure-giftshe suggests is in danger of falling into nihilism in that it is impossible to know the source of the pure-gift, as well as being distorted into an oppressive ideology forcing women to make unconditional sacrifice. John Milbank supplements the limitations of Cixous’s idea, by reinterpreting the gift-giving from the perspective of the relationship of God-human. According to him, pure giving is only possible in relation to the divine being. In this context, he emphasizes the reciprocity between the gift and the transcendental power that makes it possible. The reciprocity between God and human being is not the immediate and symmetrical but the delayed and asymmetrical, since there are infinite qualitative differences between God and human being. The reciprocal and cyclical relation between ‘self-giving’ and ‘empowerment’ is a condition for the feminist reconstruction of the gift economy.
