기독교 신앙과 가치관을 어떻게 대학의 교양교육 교과과정에 구현할 것인가? 미국 주요 기독교 대학 열 개의 사례를 통해 우리는 기독교 교양교육의 이념과 운영 방식에 대한 다양한 대안과 통찰을 얻고자 한다. 먼저 각 대학의 교양교육에 관한 사명 선언을 분석함으로써 우리는 ‘중핵 과정’(core curriculum)의 토대와 목적, 내용이 기독교적 가치에 연결되는 다양한 방식들을 추적했다. 기독교 교양교육의 이념을 명확히 진술하는 기독교 대학의 사명 선언은 교과과정을 설계하고 운영하는 데 있어서 원리적 기초가 된다는 면에서 중요하다. 그와 함께 우리는 실제 교과과정의 구조와 편성되는 교과목들의 종류, 배분 방식에서 기독교 교양교육이 어떻게 구현되는지를 관찰하고 비교, 분석했다. 성서와 기독교 사상, 역사 등 명시적으로 기독교적 성격을 띠는 교과목들이 여러 대학의 기독교 교양교육에서 핵심적 위치를 점했지만, 몇몇 학교들은 기독교 신앙과 여타 전공분야, 그리고 삶의 현실 문제들과의 통합을 모색하는 교과목들을 교과과정에 반영하고 있다. 학생들의 전인적 발달, 그리고 채플을 비롯한 신앙적 활동들 또한 기독교 교양의 중요한 부분이다. 후자의 경우는 대부분 학교에서 비교과 활동으로 편성하되 학생들의 참여를 독려하기 위한 다양한 정책들을 시행하고 있다. 국내 기독교 대학들이 기독교적 가치와 이념을 교양 교과과정에 포괄적이고 효율적으로 반영하는 데 도움이 될 착안점이 이 연구로부터 도출될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study explores how the ideal of Christian liberal arts is articulated and implemented in the higher-education setting. Taking cases from ten schools in the United States, we have first perused the mission statement on the core curriculum of each university, identifying the foundation, purpose, and contents of liberal arts eduction. Each school has unique ways of stating what Christian liberal eduction is and what they want to see in their students’ intellectual, emotional and spiritual developments through their core curriculum. Then we have examined the ways in which core curricula are structured as a reflection of the Christian ideal predicated in the mission statements. Courses of explicitly Christian nature such as the Bible, theology, and church history take a central place in several school's curricula. Other schools put more emphases on integrative courses that bridge faith with other disciplines and contemporary issues in the world. Developing Christian character is another essential part in many universities’ core curricula, and so is chapel which in most schools isa extra-curricular element rather than offered as a credited course. Various policies are adopted by universities to ensure students’ participation in chapel and other faith-related activities. Observation, analyses, and comparisions of ten faith-based core curricula will hopefully give us valuable insights and ideas to apply in the Christian universities in Korea.
