Abstract

To explore the tomb style within the Midwest area of Korea in the period between the Proto-Three Kingdoms and the Baekjae Period, various approaches of comprehension took place through the accumulation of the graveyard materials and the achievement of research. The typical tomb types of this period were simple togwangmyos, Jugu-Togwangmyo, bungumyos, stone-lined tombs, stone-chambered tombs, etc., and more specific categorization is also possible according to their forms and structures. And with the accumulation of these materials, the studies on the origin of the tomb types, the time of their emergence, and the characteristics and structure of the tombs types as well are conducted, and research is continuously carried out on the communities who had created the graveyards. The fact that the product of the different types of research is used as critical evidence to grasp the dynamics of political change and the society of the time is worth of notice. Despite the academic accomplishment, more thorough and minute methods of approach are needed due to my multiple views on the subject, the lack of sources and the emergence of new materials. Particularly, it lacks the sufficient sources for the cultural style of the period between the Later Han Dynasty before the Common Era and the 2nd century, taken place in the whole Midwest area, to take concrete shape, and, it is even regarded to have almost no accomplishment of research on the cultural style of this period. Thus, this paper examines the graveyard materials that have been recorded chronologically since the mid- 2nd century and explores their change, based on the aforementioned limitations. A preliminary approach to the tomb types that came before the emergence of JuguTogwangmyo and the representative materials for graveyards of this period was attempted. The approach to the preceding tomb types was focused on their external characteristics, and it seems the most appropriate that they are identified as togwangmyos and bongtomyos. On chapter 4, the stages of change in the emergence period of Jugu-togwangmyo is divided into the simple togwangmyo period, the emergence period of Jugu-togwangmyo and the spread period of Jugu-togwangmyo, and it thoroughly explored the characteristics of tomb styles by period, and the change in the tomb furnishings.
