原三國時代 土器에 대한 理論的 論議의 方向 -영남지방의 토기자료를 중심으로-

초록

와질토기논쟁은 원삼국시대 토기의 실체와 계보 및 연대에 관한 지극히 전통고고학적인 문제에서 출발하였다. 이 와질토기논쟁을 통해 우리는 토기연구를 둘러싼 문제와 접근의 방법에 대해 사색할 기회가 많았다. 그리고 이 논쟁의 핵심적인 쟁점들을 새로운 이론적인 관점으로 조정해 보려는 노력도 있었다. 예를 들어 유물군의 차이를 생산체계의 차이로 인식하고 생산체계의 규모와 형태, 그리고 조직을 복원해 보려 했다든가 새로운 기술요소 및 제작공정의 도입을 특정한 사회적, 정치경제적 조건하에 진행되는 기술혁신의 과정으로 설명하려고도 했다.그러나 와질토기논쟁 이후 지금까지도 원삼국시대 토기에 대한 논의는 전통적인 과제와 관점, 그리고 오래된 방법론에서 벗어나지 못하고 있는 것이 현실이다. 편년표를 재작성하기 위한 형식분류, 토기유물군의 변화에 대한 이주-전파론적 설명, 이른바 양식의 분포에 대한 정치사적 해석이 아직 극복되지 않고 있다.원삼국시대 토기의 연구를 보다 진전된 접근의 방법과 관점에서 현대고고학의 이론적인 논의로 발전시키려면 다음과 같은 세 가지 전제를 고려하지 않으면 안 될 것이다. 첫째, 원삼국시대 토기는 족장사회의 초보적인 전문화를 넘어 고대사회의 대량생산체계를 조직해 가는 과도기적인 생산체계의 산물이란 것이다. 둘째, 다른 어느 시대보다 낙랑이나 중국동북지방으로부터 신기술과 그에 관해 정보가 많이 유입되었고 토기제작자는 당시의 사회문화적, 혹은 정치경제적 조건하에서 기술요소를 선택하고 조합하여 새로운 생산체계를 조직하였다. 그리고 셋째로, 기술혁신의 과정은 영남지방 안에서도 지역적인 여건이 불균등하여 서로 차별화되었다. 그러므로 여러 유형의 토기들이 공존하고 교체되는 과정을 이해하려면 생산체계의 복원과 그 발전 과정에 대한 설명이 필요하다. 그리고 토기생산기술혁신의 시공적인 과정을 당시의 역사적 콘텍스트에서 제작자의 선택과정으로 설명하려는 노력도 요구된다.

Abstract

The Proto-three Kingdom period in the Southeastern region of Korean peninsular was the dynamic age during which the simple chiefdoms of Bronze Age had been integrated into the early state of the Three-Kingdom period. In the period, therefore, the significant changes appeared in the manufacturing technique, functional differentiation, or production and distribution mode of pottery. The Korean archaeologists have analyzed the ceramic data of the Proto-three Kingdom period to solve the traditional problems based on the intuitive typological classification irrelevant to the past human behavior until quite recently. In the article, I would like to propose some theoretical assumptions considering what are meaningful questions to the variations of the Proto-three Kingdom ceramics. First, to understand the temporal variation of the ceramic assemblages, the different craft production systems of pottery must be considered. In the period, the several different production systems, classified in regard to their scale, intensity, organization and context, coexisted and the one of them replaced the other. Second, for explaining the innovation process in the ceramic production systems, we must focus on the technological choices of producer as a social actor among the various technological elements in the changing context.
