Abstract

As an effort of research on cultural history to concretize the cultural aspects of regional units based on archeological materials, this study aims to examine the cultural aspects of ancient Dangjin area mainly with relics chronologically recorded as from Proto-Three Kingdoms of Korea to Baekje among archeological materials excavated recently in Dangjin area, figure out the cultural aspects of the central and local societies grounded on that, and examine the cultural identity of Dangjin. Generally, in the development of modern traffic routes, too, a region’s status in terms of traffic routes differed according to the degree of connection between waterways and land routes. In this perspective, after Baekje’s transfer of the capital to Woongjin, Dangjin was included in the center’s cultural area aggressively, so we can assume that it was included into the central area positively as a base that connected the waterways to stable land routes for exchange with China. In other words, among the archeological materials excavated in Dangjin, we can see from the relics associated with their living or burial tradition a cultural aspect that during the period of Hanseong, they actively adopted the center’s culture while maintaining the tradition of local culture in the region’s society of Baekje. Meanwhile, during the period of Sabi being the capital, with the burial system in the center of Baekje as well as the cultural aspect related to ancient tombs from which gilt bronze earrings, a kind of attachable elite grave goods, were excavated, we can see that it was under the aggressive control of the center. The materials tell us that in the period of Woongjin-Sabi being the capital, while the importance of Dangjin area was increased as a gateway for exchange with China by the center of Baekje, local society was going through the process of becoming central bureaucrats. According to the analysis results, during the period of Hanseong being the capital, Dangjin area was the gateway of region’s society endeavoring to accept culture actively in relations between the central and local areas in Baekje, and during the period of Sabi being the capital after the transfer of the capital to Woongjin, its regional importance was even more increased as a national gateway for exchange with China.
